Last night I was watching the Browns/Broncos game and the Broncos ran something I’d been looking for the Packers to ever since Matt LaFleur was named Head Coach. It’s called Leak and it’s perfect.

Leak is a concept that works well off of the wide zone running scheme. Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve written about the Packers continuing to vary their use of the PA Boot passing concept, and the reasoning behind that. I wrote about it yesterday, as a matter of fact.
But what is Leak? Put somewhat simply, it’s a counter to a counter. If a wide zone run is your base concept, PA Boot is the counter to it. And if PA Boot is your counter, then Leak is a counter to that counter: a half-boot concept with the end blocker engaging on an initial block, then releasing and sneaking over the line before emerging out the other side.
I decided the best way to walk through this was for a brief walkthrough of the Broncos play from last night. Talking helped me more than writing, so I hope you enjoy this short walkthrough and a brief explanation of the thinking about Leak.
