I missed last week, but I can assure you there was nothing major to report on the RPO front. It was bad, I was tired and didn’t have the energy to write about it. The end.
This week? Listen man, they lost their 4th straight game, but the RPO game was pretty good. From the run perspective, anyway. Let’s take a look.
The Packers had 14 total RPO calls this past week, throwing on 35.7% of them. The pass game doesn’t come out looking very good, which is mainly due to Rodgers pulling the ball on a vertical RPO look and promptly getting sacked because Zach Tom let a man into the backfield immediately. If that one play went differently, they would be looking at a 5.3 YPA average on pass plays. Which would be good!
This is the best the run game has performed so far, which is encouraging. Racking up 9.3 YPA on plays where they handed the ball off is really nice work. In terms of how the RPO game stacked up to the non-RPO run game?
Pretty good!
They did some really nice work with their 12 and 21 personnel looks, which I love.
Overall, a really nice week from the RPO game. Some really nice variety when running the Pony Package, and a great use of Josiah Deguara, who was mainly utilized as a blocker out of motion when he was out there on RPOs.
Big, big fan.
Let’s look at some other stuff I did this week.
For Packer Report, I looked at a rep from the Pony Package that I really liked. The Packers haven’t shown a lot of creativity out of that look this year, so I sat up a little straighter when I saw a post/wheel look.
For Cheesehead TV, I dug into some numbers for the Packers passing game against the Bills, then dug into two plays involving Romeo Doubs:
Using pre-snap motion to get Doubs a free release on his TD catch
A big completion to Doubs on a Smash concept
I also did a few videos breaking down plays.
I took a look at Toure’s TD and contrasted that with a similar play against the Commanders that fell incomplete to Doubs.
I dug into the only touch from Christian Watson on the game; a nifty way to play off a core concept of theirs while getting Watson in space behind a convoy.
I dipped my toes into the world of the Packers defense by looking at the TD to Diggs and talking about Quarters coverage.
And, lastly, I looked at a completion to Jones on an angle route, and mused why Rodgers didn’t rip a throw up the seam.
Yes, it was another loss, and that’s not good. But I had fun digging in this week and learning a little more on both sides of the ball. Hope you all did as well.
