Been a couple weeks since I’ve done anything in this space. The short week that followed MNF, combined with a travel day back from the game and all the madness of the holiday & my son’s birthday will do that.
But we’re back, so let’s not spend too much time with formalities. How did the Packers do in their RPO game against the Dolphins?
They had a really nice day throwing the ball, bolstered in part by the 11 yards gained off the one time they dialed up the Slant tag. Once again, I am begging for the Packers to run more vertical RPOs with some true post-snap reads. One of these days I’m going to just pull every clip of the Bills doing it this year and spending time in this space saying, “SEE! SEE HOW COOL IT IS!”
How did the run game fare with and without RPO tags?
Not great. Better with an RPO tag, but it was pretty tough sledding either way. As much as I like AJ Dillon and Patrick Taylor, the running game really struggles when Aaron Jones isn’t able to be on the field for his full amount of snaps. Here’s to hoping we see more of him against the Vikings this weekend.
What else did I get into this week? Let’s see…
For Packer Report, I dove into the Dragon concept, specifically against Man Coverage.
For Cheesehead TV, I took a wide look at the passing offense against the Dolphins, then really dove into the aforementioned Slant RPO, and a play that helped the Packers confirm the Dolphins coverage.
And then there were some videos, starting with a couple throws that went to Marcedes Lewis.
I dove into the insane throw from Rodgers up the left sideline that Lewis hauled in. Rodgers talked a bit about the initial read - an option route to Doubs - so I got into that a bit.
Next up on the Big Dog front, I looked at the TD to Lewis out of a personnel grouping that we have not seen in the LaFleur era.
After that, I took a look at a couple play action bootleg plays, and talked about how the Packers are changing the backside routes on those plays to account for how defenses are attempting to take away the main concept.
And, lastly, I tried my hand at a Special Teams breakdown, looking at the blocking scheme on Nixon’s long kickoff return.
I posted a little breakdown over on Twitter in case you don’t feel like sitting through the whole video.
A really fun week! I’m hoping to be able to get to a deep dive into Darnell Savage, so I’m sure I’ll be shouting about that when it’s out.
As always, thanks for following along! Truly appreciate all the support this season. You guys are the best.
