I spend a lot of time every week tagging plays in the Packers offense, and I only use a fraction of that every week during the season. Sure, it helps me out for offseason projects, but most of these plays just sit collecting dust. Because, while tagging takes time, trying to find something to write about them every week can be time-consuming.
So I’ll probably just start doing this. Making cut-ups week-to-week of stuff I’ve tagged then just kinda dumping it here. Wrap it up in a carpet and just let it roll out of the van while I take a quick turn.
Maybe I’ll come back around at some point and do some analysis. Maybe I won’t. Life is a mystery and all of us are just kinda floating.
So here we go. The Packers screen game through 6 games. By my count, they have run some variation of a screen 23 times (4 of them being tags on the RPO game that were thrown). On those 23 plays, Love is 17/23 (73.9%) for 140 yards (6.1 YPA).
If you take out the RPOs, he’s 13/19 (68.4%) for 114 yards (6.0 YPA).
Which doesn’t sound too bad, until you remember that one of these was a 51 yard gain in week 1. It’s a dicey proposition to say, “hey, if you remove the best play they were actually bad,” but with 18 other non-RPO screens, I feel like it can give a clearer picture of how the screen game has looked for the season on a whole.
Anyway, take out that 51 yard gain and Love is 12/18 (66.7%) for 63 yards (3.5). Not great, brother. Not great.
Not that this is all on Love. The screen operation has been a nightmare on all fronts, but I’m sure you already knew that.
I swore I wasn’t going to write a lot and then I wrote some. I have more to say on it, but I don’t want to talk about it anymore. I’ve got other things to do.
Here. Have some screens.
