As I try to do every week, I wanted to take a look back at what I did this week. Someone has to be held accountable for my crimes, and I have decided that I will be the one working as Judge Judy and executioner.
For Packer Report, I wrote about two plays involving tight ends and misdirection.
Josiah Deguara playing possum after a block on the edge.
Marcedes Lewis’ TD catch.
For Cheesehead TV, I took a look at the overall passing game in week 5, then focused in on three plays that caught my eye.
A way to run the Hank (hitch/flat) concept that I haven’t seen from the Packers before
The return of the Cross-Country Dagger concept for a 22 yard gain to Doubs.
Rodgers taking what the defense gives him to hit Deguara quickly and allow him to get upfield.
For this very blog/newsletter/what-have-you, I took a look at how the Packers did when dialing up RPOs in week 5. Runs were good, passes were bad!
From there? Man, from there we hit some videos where my dumb voice talked football.
I kicked things off by looking at the Packers three-and-out in the second half. They only got 3 drives in the half (not counting the one-play Hail Mary call to end the game), so to go three-and-out on one of them was less-than-ideal. I talk about each of the calls, what the thought process was for the progression of each, and talk about where each one went wrong.
Because I don’t like being happy, I dug into the final “real” play of the game for Green Bay: the throw on 4th & 2 that is batted down by a blitzing safety. I talk about 2 plays from earlier in the game that may have informed part of the decision, and I also dig into the overall RPO philosophy from the Packers and why that throw went to the fade as opposed to the slant on the other side (spoiler alert: it has nothing to do with hero ball and everything to do with their approach to RPOs).
I also talked about looking at run calls from looking at pre-snap blocking angles, as opposed to simply looking at the box count. Of everything I did this week, this is the one I’m most proud of.
I looked at the three instances of the Packers using the Drift/Strike concept in week 5. It has been their best, most consistent passing concept this year, but it didn’t go so well this week. I looked into what happened.
I looked at the first third down of the game for the Packers. They ended up picking up a nice gain, but it was off secondary movement. I looked at why that happened, and talk about something that is currently plaguing the offense: routes breaking at wrong depths and seeing receivers run into each other.
Finally - mercifully - I looked at a big play that wasn’t: an overthrow to Randall Cobb up the left seam. I use it as a chance to talk about the 4 verts concept and lament the TD that wasn’t.
The Packers lost and that stinks, but, overall, I had a lot of fun this week, and I learned a ton. Thanks to everyone who read a single word I wrote this week or watched even a second of one of these videos. I appreciate you.
I’m gonna watch some bad football tonight, watch Halloween Ends a little later, and gear up for another week of Packers content next week. Thanks for following along with me! Hope you’re having half as much fun with all of this as I am.
