The 2022 season is right around the corner, but I’m not quite ready to put a bow on 2021 just yet. I tend to try to take it easy during the offseason, but then camp updates start firing and I get hyped about football, but there’s still no football for me to really talk about. So, like Clark Griswold in the attic, I pull out the old tape and cry silently to myself while thinking about days gone by.
Today, I decided to talk about Randall Cobb’s TD off an angle route against the Rams. I talked about hunting mismatches with Pony package (even though this specific play is 10 personnel) in the hopes of projecting that forward. The Packers only trotted out their Pony package on 2% of their offensive snaps in 2021. That’s down from 16% of snaps in 2020.
(“Pony package” is where the Packers will have 2 running backs on the field at the same time. They’ll typically use motion with that package as a way to hunt for mismatches.)
Though this play doesn’t actually show the Pony package, this is the type of play you’d see the Packers running out of it. Use some motion, overload a side and look for the best mismatch to exploit.
This play ended up with a TD to Randall Cobb, which is really the absolute best outcome of any play. “Touchdown to Randall Cobb” is actually proven to be the most pleasing phrase in the English language. It’s science.
